Bird-brained farmer

I don't care who you are - a sunflower just has to make you feel like the plant kingdom is smiling at you!

This one was planted by some careless bird at the feeder.

This post chokes me up. I'm from Kansas. As you probably know, sunflowers follow the sun. Their face turns throughout the day to stay face-to-face with that glowing fireball.

You know, this little guy doesn't seem to follow the sun. I tried interviewing him but he kept mum ... er, silent. My operating theory is that because he is located under the shade of some trees, his source of light comes from straight ahead, not overhead. So, by facing forward, he stays oriented to the strongest light source, which never changes direction, only intensity.

I talked to a Kansas pioneer -- my 88-year-old Mom -- yesterday. She knows sunflowers (the state flower). She said that they DO follow the sun.

Mom has spoken. Nothing remains to be said. :-)
